Frequently Asked Questions:
What size are your plants?
We use the nursery industry standard 4” containers for most of our ferns. We remove the plant from the container before shipping to check and ensure it has a solid and well-established root system. Some plants may be available in larger sizes or only in larger sizes, which will be noted in the description and/or size selection options.
How do you ship your plants?
We only ship via United States Postal Service Priority Mail to ensure your plants do not spend long in transit. Delivery typically takes 1-3 days from the ship date depending on your location. Plants and are removed from their containers and put into plastic sleeves to help them retain moisture on their journey and protect their fronds. The root-ball and fronds are then carefully wrapped in newsprint to cushion them and protect the fronds from breaking. Plants are packed tightly in a box so they cannot shift and break during transit. We take great care not to stack our plants so deep that they get crushed from the weight, which means you may receive several small to medium sized boxes instead of one large one. All plants are shipped with their name label which includes information on plant size, common name, and preferred growing conditions. We do not bare-root our plants and make every effort to have them arrive with their fronds intact.
Where do you ship to?
We ship to all 50 U.S. states, including Alaska and Hawai’i. Some agricultural restrictions may apply on Tropical/Sub-Tropical material sent to Hawai’i.
When do you ship?
Spring Shipping: March - Mid-July
Fall Shipping: September - Mid-November
Shipping times will depend on your location and your requested ship date. We make every effort to make sure your ferns arrive in good shape around the time you want them, so we watch the weather and try to send them at the optimum time. Most local orders (WA, OR, CA) are able to be sent year-round, but please note deciduous ferns may be dormant in winter months and sub-tropical ferns cannot be shipped during cold (low 30s or below) weather. In general, we ship to all areas in the U.S. in spring beginning in March and continuing until Mid-June or early July. During summer heat we may suspend shipments to certain areas with high temperatures until conditions are more favorable. Shipping resumes to all areas in the fall beginning in September and continuing into Mid-November.
How quickly can I receive the plants I order?
This will depend entirely on when you order and the current conditions in our area, your area, and the transit zones in between. We make every effort to ship your plants as near to your requested date as possible, but also want your plants to arrive in the best shape possible. In general, ferns do not like to be confined in a box for several days when the temperatures are above the mid 80s, or in the low 30s as it can stress and damage them, so we do our best to monitor conditions and keep in contact with you on when to expect your order. Some of our crops are in limited supply so it may be difficult for us to replace your exact order if the plants are badly damaged by weather conditions during transit, so we would prefer they arrive safely the first time! Once they are shipped it generally takes 1-3 business days for them to arrive.
How much does shipping cost?
The cost of shipping will depend on how many ferns you order. The weight and size of plants can vary quite wildly, and we do our best to have our website estimate the shipping cost for a variety of plants and zones, though it is not always perfectly accurate. We do not charge for shipping materials or handling. We ship USPS Priority Mail and the base cost of a medium flat rate box (the smallest box a typical fern or two fit in) is $16.25. We strongly encourage (but do not require) you to order at least 3 or more ferns in order to maximize the number of plants you will receive compared to the shipping cost. If for some reason there is a discrepancy that results in excess shipping charges, we are generally happy to include extra hand-picked plants in your shipment or refund you the difference upon request.
